Finding the model number
Check the plate before you buy anything: a Dyson name on the box can cover more than one version. The serial number is on a rating plate on the machine. On the V6 and DC59 it's on the main body behind the clear bin, as it is on the V8 Cyclone. The V7 and V11 have it on the base instead, and so do most of the newer sticks. You'll find separate serial numbers on the battery and charger, and typing the machine's serial into Dyson's spare-parts pages brings up the right parts.

When to change them
Wash the filter at least once a month; the screen flags when it needs cleaning. Dry for at least 24 hours. (source)
Only rinse a filter the maker says is washable, and let it dry right through before it goes back in. Most of the "it smells" complaints start with a damp filter.
You'll know the battery's going when a full charge stops lasting a whole clean. It happens slowly and creeps up on you.
Cutting out early isn't always the battery. A blocked filter or wand can do the same, and clearing it costs nothing.
