Finding the model number
Check the plate before you buy anything: a Vax name on the box can cover more than one version. Vax puts the rating label on a white or silver sticker on the back of the machine or underneath it. The model number is a mix of letters and numbers such as U84-AL-Pe or UCA1GEV1, and the serial number is 21 digits long.

When to change them
Pre-motor filter: tap out the dust, rinse under the tap with no detergent, leave 24 hours to air dry. Post-motor filter: knock out debris; do not wash, replace it if badly discoloured. No set interval given. (source)
Only rinse a filter the maker says is washable, and let it dry right through before it goes back in. Most of the "it smells" complaints start with a damp filter.
